S.A. Borders-Shoemaker: One Poem

THE LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS

Hot and Cold are-

Beneath the skin’s edges
Undulating with neurological music
Raucous yet silent
Near
Irreverent of persons
Nestled like weeds
Gradual and brisk.

To be these things is to
burn.
Like a razor’s edge,
they capture attention and demand
response.
Cold
simply understands the need for
stillness,
as heat understands the need for
energy.

Static and
dynamic,
they slide past one another as
partners in a
dance
with the surrounding world.
Regardless of our sentiments,
they move
onward.

S.A. Borders-Shoemaker is a PhD Candidate at George Mason University’s School of Conflict Analysis & Resolution. Through her studies, life experiences living abroad, and volunteer/activist work, Borders-Shoemaker seeks to explore the complexity of the world and delve into its paradoxes.
